Earlier this year, I received the stunning news that Faces, a youth magazine in the stable of Cricketmedia has accepted my pitch to write a piece for their publication and it touches on two of my very favorite topics - horses and history. I had such a fun time researching and writing the story. And it's out in the May/June issue - Capturing Our World.

First of all, dear friends, happy Halloween. I hope you have a good time amidst all the ghosts, ghouls and other ghastlies. Out here in Cape Town, Halloween coincides with the SA Horrorfest, a multi-faceted film festival that opens with a literary event known as Bloody Parchment. Since 2009, I have been a participant and last year, I brought out a short e-book collection that includes my stories from 2009 to 2014. It is available as a free download at this link. First of all, kudus to Smashwords for remembering that there are still a handful of us at the bottom of the world who spend this time of the year shivering, rather than bronzing ourselves.
Getting down to business, click on this link to visit the sale for freebies and discounts on a huge variety of ebooks, including a couple of my own. Dear friends, I'm a little late on making a grand announcement. My collection of short stories entitled 'The Art of Waking Up' has been out for about two weeks or so. It is loosely themed around the concept of reality, changes and consciousness. Have you ever woken up and felt that your life is not your life? Have you ever tried to cling with all your might to the ragged remnants of a dream, with the unshakable conviction that what you glimpsed in the secret theatre of the imagination, is your true self, your true home? Have you ever woken up and felt that your life is not your life? The stories included are: 1. After the Party 2. Flower 3 Alice by the Sea 4. Tree of Living 5. The Truth about Ants 6. Seamstresses 7. The Hours of Chronopolis 8. Night Tangles 9. Skag 10. The First Mirror 11. Grounded 12. If the Boots Fit I was googling for an article I wrote years ago, mainly to check when it was published. While the article was no longer available online, I discovered that it had been quoted as a source in another book. Very intriguing.
The book is Music and Protest in 1968 by Beate Kutchke and Barley Norton and since my article The Pocahontas of Southern Africa was about the life story of an early Khoi interpreter, I'm sure the reference was probably no more than a sentence or two. Still it kind of fascinates me a little. It The book looks interesting but a little pricey. Yesterday, I uploaded a short e-book featuring some of my poems. Most of them have appeared before on my blog at http://blackquartz.blogspot.com or on this site. You can download a copy for yourself at http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/309977. Leave a review if you liked it or DIDN'T like it. Here's a litt'e more about each of the poems:
Wintersong - Changes are in the air, but can they assert themselves against the established order? Do they have any right to? Gauntlet - A song that's been in my head for decades, but actually only came to be written recently. It's about a life cycle of a man. Monkey - This one's about identity. Or maybe a case of mistaken identity. It's surprising how quickly that can happen. I leave you this.... - Go on, which would YOU rather have? A fortune or a mysterious riddle? Brave Little Ship - ... and the ship is really a metaphor for something else. Tumba-Rumba - A paradox. I realized that sometimes life can be beautiful even at same time as being terrible. The Rat King - He's a very creepy individual. Always skulking around. He never actually trips you,, but if there is a banana skin in place, he sort of makes sure the sole of your foot will find it, whatever the odds. Seeds - About a cycle of life, rebirth and renewal Secret - If you tell a secret, it wouldn't be a secret anymore, now would it. Enjoy... For several years, I have participated in the live reading event called Bloody Parchment, which makes up part of the literary component of the SA Horrorfest. Following the success of these readings, I have for some time been playing with the idea of using my youtube channel to launch an experiment in story-telling. Most writers are unaware of the potential of youtube to showcase their work. I thought it might be interesting to revive earlier traditions of verbally sharing fiction, albeit through a new platform. The youtube video accompanying this post, 'How to Make a Wizard's Spectacles' is my second attempt, but the first one I'm going public with. Following feedback on the first (unlisted) video, I decided to keep the format simple. Just voice and text. As other members of the Adamastor Writer's Guild (of which I am a member) have expressed interest in the project, I am not ruling out the possibility of featuring stories by other writers. For the moment,I'm just seeing where this leads. Hope you enjoy it. |
